So, the New Year is here again and either you have made New Year’s resolutions or are still trying to make them. I have a couple of questions for you: How did that work out for you last year? Did you accomplish any of those goals? Did you make any strides towards the person you are striving to be?

If your answer is no,  maybe it’s time to rethink the whole approach to New Year’s resolutions. The trend has been to make big goals for the New Year but we all know that after just a few weeks we end up falling short of those goals.

This year, I want you to do something different –  I want you to start off your year IN POWER. Yes, not just empowered but ‘IN POWER’; in the driver’s seat; calling the shots, and wearing your crown.

I want you to go into this year feeling stronger,  more confident,  and in control of your goals and life.  I want you to go through this year strutting your stuff with your crown shining bright.

And how do you do that? Here are a few tips.

Think about how you want to feel.

In her book, The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul, Danielle LaPorte encourages setting goals based on how you want to feel. She says “Knowing how you actually want to feel is the most potent form of clarity you can have.”

And when you are clear on where you want to be and how you want to feel going forward then your New Year goals are all the more attainable.

So, let’s say you wanted to lose 20 pounds…

Instead of simply saying you want to lose 20 pounds, you’d consider how you want to feel as a result of the weight loss.  The question would then be, do you want to feel stronger, healthier, less out of breath?

Your power comes from connecting with the “feeling” that accomplishing the goal would give you rather than being rigid in trying to accomplish the goal itself.  Your power comes from doing what feels good.

Embrace changes.

At the beginning of every year, we would all like to think we have grown to be a better person from who we were in the year gone by.  To do this we have to be willing to change and embrace those changes.

I recently posted part of a quote by George Bernard Shaw on Instagram, “Progress is impossible without change…”

This quote resonated with me because I believe instead of resisting change, you have to know that  part of your power is being able to see change as a good thing.   Change is what causes positive shifts in the direction that we are meant to go.

The reality is that you are growing. If you aren’t a little different from who you were last year then you are stagnant. And who wants to be stagnant?  🙂

Be positive.

It seems to be the habit of us humans to think negatively of ourselves and others. We dwell on the negativity in our day-to-day lives as opposed to embracing the positive and being grateful for what we already have.

For 2017, I encourage you to walk in your power by practicing positive thinking. Be mindful of the negative thoughts that arise in day-to-day situations and repeat a positive affirmation.

My favorite is “I am enough.” In whatever I do or plan to accomplish, I am enough to make it happen.

Find an affirmation or two that you can use to remind yourself of the positive aspects. Write them down, repeat them often or stick them up where you can see them regularly.

The more positive you are about your goals the more likely you are to push through the rough patches to accomplish them.

You are in the driver’s seat and calling the shots with your crown polished and shining bright like a diamond (excuse the Rihanna lyrics lol). However, being a Girl Boss and operating in your power doesn’t mean going at it alone.

Having an accountability partner who helps keeps you on your game, makes the process a little easier. The key is finding an accountability partner who has similar goals as you and who will push you to take action.

This year, try to make it a point to find a few other Girl Bosses and consider forming a mastermind group where you can bounce ideas off each other and check in on a regular basis. There are Facebook groups for this. Just do a quick search and then take your pick of the results.

Focus on your Circle of Influence.

Stephen Covey, in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, said we all have a wide range of concerns in our lives.  There are some things we have no control over and others we can do something about. Your Circle of Influence is one of the things that you actually can change.  To walk in power this year, I encourage you to be proactive in focusing your time and energy on your Circle of Influence.

Pay attention to the things that influence you most. Notice your actions and responses to those situations and work on cleaning up your circle to include only things that invoke a positive response.   Be present, be mindful and don’t stress about things that you cannot control.

Work on what you can change and leave the other stuff for another time. Take a step back and breathe.

For many of us the New Year is all about new beginnings.  It’s no different for me. This year my goals are bigger and better for 2017!  I plan on holding on to my power throughout the year to ensure they happen. So excuse me while I reintroduce myself (while adjusting my crown) :).

Tell me how you will be embracing your power in 2017?
