Bridal Hair Artist and Updo Educator, Shawnese McDaniel speaks, on Overcoming Obstacles…
What’s the greatest challenge you’ve had to overcome:
In general one of the most challenging obstacles that I encountered on this journey has been gaining confidence in my craft. If you don’t sincerely believe in yourself and what value you hold it will be impossible to convince anyone else that you deserve a chance (to sell your service or product).
Unfortunately, due to the needs of my business/personal life, which are intertwined at this point, my journey has had some casualties; some friends have turned to associates. Though it’s good to have a diverse group of friends over time I have found that it is a necessity to have a core group of like-minded individuals in my circle of friends. These special gems constantly uplift, inspire, encourage, motivate, and stretch me out of my comfort zones. To have people that can relate to the rollercoaster of emotions that is inevitable to an entrepreneur, has been essential to my survival. We laugh together, we cry together, we pray together, and we fight for each other when we have nothing left in the tank.
Being in business for myself for officially one year has provided me with so many lessons. First and foremost, you can’t compare your progress to the progress of anyone else’s success. You have to have constant eye contact with yourself and your goals for your business. There have been times that I have looked around at someone else’s progress and got so sidetracked and defeated that I have lost sight of my own progress. It may be okay to find inspiration from other people, but know that we all have our own pace. There is a season for everyone. Secondly, this ish isn’t easy. I wear many hats daily depending on the needs of my company. This takes time, patience, and the ability to get over it when you mess up. This list could go on for hours, but I’ll cut to this last point and keep it moving. Consistency!!!! This is probably the most difficult thing for me to have and one of the most important keys to success. Keep this word in your daily affirmations.
As a woman?
As a woman, wife (of 3 years), and mother (to a toddler), I have many challenges; getting enough sleep would probably be the first thing (just kidding…but not really). This is one of the most difficult challenges because to me it’s the most important. Trying to find and maintain that healthy balance between my family, my business, and all without totally losing myself is a delicate dance. Constant readjustment of my priorities is the story of my life, but so far it has been working.
Share a quote, scripture, affirmation or mantra that has gotten you through challenging times.
I don’t really have a specific mantra, quote, affirmation, etc. I just pray. My daily walk of life includes constant conversation with God. This maintains my balance.
In closing nothing about this journey is a piece of cake, easy as pie, or anything else that sounds delicious. There will be restless nights, tearful days and faith tested moments, but I will say it is worth every life changing moment.
